Step One

In this first step, students will conduct their research to understand the background of digital citizenship as a concept.  Looking at the broader definition will help the details make more sense.

Students should use the resources on the Digital Citizenship page and use other resources the teacher provides or suggests.

Asynchronously:

Pool resources together.  If students are finding information, use this chart to list sources' web addresses for later retrieval for potential use and citation purposes.

Students need to be sure to accept the invitation to join the private Google+ Community set up by one of the teachers. Any additional comments can be posted to the Google+ Community before the video chat takes place at the end of the research allotted time.

Synchronously:

At the end of the research period, the teacher will set up a Google Hangout for a quick real-time discussion.  Besides, it's fun for the students to see and talk to the people they are working with.

Note to the teachers:

Set a deadline for this step.  This would be a good opportunity to "flip" - or spend some time with students online during the school day.

Be sure to have the Google + Community set up.  Here are decent instructions on how to do this.

In addition, a Google Hangout will need to be created.  Here are decent instructions on how to do this.

Here is a sample community for the Digital Citizenship PSA group.  Notice that the "owner" is marked, that members join by invitation only, and that links, files, events, and more can be used.
